Peggy is my new studio mate, and will be teaching two enamel courses starting in February!

Basic Enamelling on Metal

6 Saturdays, Feb. 4^th to March 10^th 2012

11:00am to 2:00pm

Instructor: Peggy Logan

In this introductory course, four groups of enamelling techniques are taught, dry application, wet charging, painting and champlevé. In the champlevé portion of the course, the etching techniques of intaglio, PNP, and sugar lift are covered. The decorative applications of foils, glass rods, and millefiori can also be incorporated into your artwork. It is helpful to have some previous jewellery making experience, but not necessary to create jewellery and small works of art. 4 student max.

Cloisonné Enamelling

5 Mondays Feb 6^th to March 5^th 2012

6:30pm to 9:00 pm

Instructor: Peggy Logan

Cloisonné means partition in French. These partitions are created with silver wire set into clear glass called flux in enamelling. They are then filled with coloured glass enamel to suit the design. Cloisonné is usually used as stone replacement in jewellery and set with a bezel. We will create a piece of Cloisonné enamel from start to finish using traditional techniques of wire bending and wet packing enamel. The use of foils under glazes and rods to add depth to your work will be discussed. Your piece can be executed on a flat or curved surface. It is preferable to have previous enameling experience. Students are to bring their own set of pliers if they can if not we have some that can be shared. 4 student max.

This beginner jewellery course introduces students to a wide range of surface treatments (etching, roller printing, stamping, hammer textures and patinas), as well as hot and cold connections (soldering and riveting) and some simple chain making. Students will leave with several pieces of finished jewellery. Projects could include pendants, earrings, bracelets or rings.
$236 course fee
$30 materials fee (includes copper, brass, and some silver- extra silver will be available for purchase.)

Eastside Culture Crawl this Weekend!

This weekend I will be participating in the Eastside Culture Crawl for the second time! The Crawl is an huge annual event where over 300 artists on the East side of Vancouver open their studios to the public for sales, socializing and networking.

Please visit me at the Mergatroid Building at 975 Vernon Drive, corner of Vernon and Parker. I am around the back, enter off the parking lot at studio 1171.

Will be showing a broad range of my work, from jewellery and accessories to sculpture and wallpieces.

Hours are Friday (tonight!) 5 pm to 10 pm, Saturday/Sunday 11-6 pm.

I will soon be offering jewellery workshops at my new studio in East Vancouver. I will be moving next door to 1177 Parker St. and will be setting it up as a teaching/learning space. Peggy Logan will be my new studio mate, and we will be offering a range of evening and weekend courses, from beginner jewellery and enamels, to damascene and beginner blacksmithing.

"Women Who Work With Metal" Group Show in Maple Ridge, BC

Here's the invite to a group show I'm in Oct. 8- Nov. 12. Maple Ridge has a beautiful arts centre and gallery, and this show has some spectacular work in it. I especially love Sylvie Roussel-Janssen's work, pictured at the bottom of this post. I thought at first it was stained glass, but it is actually fabric stretched over a series of metal frames.

Please note I will be giving an artist talk on November 5, 1-2:30 pm. I will be showing a slide presentation of the progression of my work from jewellery to sculpture, some photos of the armour and samurai sword fittings that have inspired me, and also a bit of a travelogue of the artist residency I did in Finland, which was so important to the development of my work.

Setting up the show with the other 5 artists, I was amazed at the variety of approaches to working in metal.

Show opens at Circle Craft on Granville Island

A new show of my work has just opened at Circle Craft Gallery in Vancouver. The details:

The show is an overview of work I have done over the last 2 years, including some of the "Precious" Series (farming and garden tools inlaid with silver and gold), framed wall pieces, home decor items, belt buckles, and some brand-new jewellery pieces.

I have also just returned from a week of teaching at Red Deer College's "Series Summer School of the Arts" in Alberta. I hope to return there next year to teach again, and am also looking at other summer schools to teach at next summer, including Haliburton, Ontario, and Metchosin, Vancouver Island. Champ-levé Enamel on Silver
Course Description:

Champ-levé is a type of enamel in which the colour is inlaid into a recessed pattern in the metal, giving it a similar look to stained glass or mosaic. Complex, multicoloured patterns can be created using this torch-fired method. Because students will learn to make a piece of jewellery from start to finish, they will learn basic jewellery techniques such as cutting, soldering and polishing, as well as the torch-fired enamel process. This technique is well-suited to the most basic home jewellery studio, as no kilns are required. Suitable for all skill levels, from beginner to advanced.

Course fee $595 (CDN) plus GST ($29.75)

Instructor Bio:

Karin Jones is a Vancouver-based, German-trained goldsmith and metal artist with 20 years experience in the trade. Her Champ-levé enamel designs are well-know throughout western Canada. She has also spent many years as a bench goldsmith, and has recently turned her attention to working in steel, specializing in Damascene inlay (silver and gold inlay on steel).

An IDYLL is a short highly wrought descriptive poem of scenes of pastoral life, usually bucolic, usually rustic, often mannered and satiric in nature it may also reference a cure for the soul. The perception is of simplicity, the reality is often otherwise.

This show was inspired by an extra-ordinarily beautiful shovel. Once an ordinary old tool it was found and rescued from rusting obscurity by artist Karin Jones. Newly refurbished, its years of honest toil are still apparent but it is now a gleaming black art object. Embellished with gold and silver in the centuries old technique of Damascene Inlay, the shovel now questions all our perceptions of rural life, and in particular those that reference that familiar Salt Spring Island idea of paradise: the garden.

During the last year Karin has added other tools. The result is a highly stylized array of weapons that were once used to tame and subjugate nature, keep weeds at bay and all things within the deer proof palisades fruitful. In their new form they are more decorative than useful, a reminder of other times when overly romantic artists, craftsmen and writers grouped together to pursue a rural life where the spiritual, the aesthetic, and the simple pleasures of good food and good times would always be in balance. A philosophy with eternal appeal as an ideal, it has so far proved inherently impractical as a way of life for everyone.

To complement Karin's work we looked in our own neck of the woods, our south end Salt Spring Island “piece of paradise” , and found both romantic and realistic art treasures of our own.

Delaine Faulkner has scripted writers’ reflections on the garden, including Murray Reiss’s wonderful story poem “ Wild Strawberries” a rumination on the possibilities of his own place and life journey. Stella Weinert’s photographs reveal two people very at ease in their environment. Stefanie Denz’s painting reminds us that a garden offers us all a chance to return to the exuberance, the joy and the serenity of a more innocent time. And Bill Rhode’s ravens fly across cultures, observing all, from a time long before we came to the island. Keepers of secrets, bearers of magic, healers and clarifiers, whether we see them as tricksters or teachers depends, the Coast Salish believe, on whether we have learned from our past experiences.

About the Artists

All the artists in this show are from Salt Spring except for Karin Jones who has recently moved to Vancouver. We hope she will come back often to visit and tell us how our re-creations are doing.

Enamel and Damascene Courses in Nelson, BC

I will be teaching 2 week-long workshops at Kootenay School of Arts and Crafts at Selkirk College in Nelson, BC, Canada, this summer.

The first, champ-leve enameling, will run from Aug. 9-13.

Here is the course description:

"Champ-levé (French for “raised field”) enamel works are created by piercing a pattern out of a sheet of silver or other metal, and soldering it onto a back plate. This creates a recessed pattern which can then be filled with glass enamel, creating an inlaid, flush look, similar to stained glass or mosaic. Because Karin teaches making a piece of jewellery from start to finish, students will learn basic jewellery techniques such as drilling, saw-piercing, soldering, and finishing, as well as applying and torch-firing the enamel itself. Intermediate students will receive tips on fine-tuning their technique, as well as creating intricate works in this beautiful and ancient art form. Students will leave with several pieces of colourful, finished jewellery, as well as an excellent knowledge of fundamental jewellery techniques suitable for a small, basic home workshop, or professional studio alike.

The second course, Damascene Inlay (Silver and Gold Inlay on Steel) will run Aug. 16-20. Course Description:

"Damascene is an age-old method of inlaying silver and gold onto steel, originally used in the decoration of weapons, arms and armour. It has been used extensively in Japan (on samurai sword fittings), Europe (on suits of armour and helmets), and the Middle East (on platters, decorative objects and bowls, as well as weapons). Done by creating a texture on steel and hammering gold and silver foils into the textured areas using various punches and hammers, this work offers the possibility of creating incredibly intricate patterns and designs in metal. Karin Marita Jones has developed her own method of working with damascene, adapted to readily available tools and materials, while staying true to the original, authentic principles of this technique. This course will appeal to both jewellers working on small objects, and blacksmiths/metal sculptors working on a larger scale. Focus in this class will be on smaller objects, as the course will be taught in a jewellery workshop; however, it is easily adaptable to larger works, and metal artists are encouraged to bring their own steel objects for inlaying in class. Students will leave with several pieces of finished artwork. Basic principles of metal working and properties of materials will also be covered. Suitable for all skill levels.

In other news:

The season is off to a busy start. I have just finished applying for some exhibitions, which is somehow more work than it seems! My elaborate mason jars (see April post) have been accepted to be shown at the Canadian pavilion at the Cheongju International Craft Biennale in Korea this fall. I'm working on getting over there myself to present them, but for now I'm excited that my work gets to travel, even if I don't! And, closer to home, look for these framed wall pieces, first at the Precious Metals showcase at Mahon Hall on Salt Spring Island, (July 3-16), and then at the "Unity and Diversity in BC Craft" exhibition at the Vancouver Museum, to coincide with the 2010 Olympics:

Finally some news!

Hello friends,

My selling season has officially begun! I will be at Granville Island Market in Vancouver this weekend, from Friday to Monday, 9 am to 7 pm. Come and look for me at my table (not sure where it will be this time, but you'll find me.) I will also be at the Saturday Market on Salt Spring Island most weekends starting on April 17. Stop by and check out the new collection!

I'm doing less and less jewellery these days, and the funnest thing I'm making right now is a collection of mason jars with blackened steel lids, with silver and gold damascene inlay.

These are the crazy, elaborate, extravagant ones which I am entering in international art shows and competitions. They have already been accepted to the annual exhibition in Fiskars, Finland, and 5 of them are en route there as I write. ($500 each):

I have also created a production line of these jars, a little simpler and more affordable ($40 each):

Excellent for storing all kinds of dry goods on your kitchen counter, (tea, coffee, sugar, etc.); for displaying collections of beach glass, pebbles, buttons or other treasures; can also be used in the bathroom for q-tips, cotton balls, bath balls, etc. Just a few suggestions!

And of course, I'll still have lots of belt buckles, cuffs, key rings, and some art pieces as well.

Well, the time had finally come to update my website, and since I'm reinventing myself, I decided on a whole new domain name as well as a new look. My site will no longer be http://www.karinmaritajones.com/, but http://www.karinjones.com/. However, it's not quite ready, my webmistress is hoping to have it up and running by the end of October. Hi Everybody,

I've started this blog so I can keep people updated on my new work and projects. This new work, which isn't on my website yet, is made of blackened mild steel, inlaid with silver and 24K gold. It's a technique which was developed for decorating ceremonial arms and armour, and I though it would be a unique art form for contemporary craft. I learned this process several years ago at a workshop in Mendocino, California, but it wasn't until last year that I finally had time to practice and perfect it, and adapt it to my work.

The Damascene work is available in Vancouver at Crafthouse Gallery on Granville Island, and Jewellerbau, a new art and jewellery gallery on Main Street, between Kingsway and Broadway (www.jewellerbau.blogspot.com). Hopefully soon I will have gallery representation at home on Salt Spring Island as well.
